Michael had just left an abusive relationship and, as a result, was homeless. He did not have any family in Utah and was not in contact with most of his family across the country. He didn’t have anywhere to go so he tried to stay with friends who would allow him to stay with them a few days at a time. Running out of options, he eventually went in to the Family Justice Center and was linked up with Sam from the YWCA. Sam referred him to Utah Community Action (UCA) to see if he could get help with a deposit to move into an apartment while he looked for a job.
When Utah Community Action Program’s housing case manager first met Michael, he was enrolled at the University of Utah and was trying to finish his classes, look for a job and find a place to sleep each night. During the intake process, the case manager determined that he was eligible for rent and deposit assistance for a few months while he looked for work.
The case manager provided Michael a list of affordable apartment options. Within a week, he was approved for a safe and affordable apartment that only cost $350 each month. With assistance from UCA, Michael moved into his apartment and two weeks later was offered a part-time job at KUED as a fundraiser. Additionally, Michael secured a second part-time job with the University of Utah.
From his experience with the YWCA and the assistance he received from UCA, Michael decided to pursue a career in the nonprofit field. Michael is now a supervisor at The Road Home, helping individuals who have gone through experiences similar to his own. He is still living in the apartment that he moved into last year with the assistance of our program.
